Seven Gita Verses

Bhagavad Gita, Chapter II, verses 19-25
translated from Sanskrit
by Swami Shyam

If you think that Self is killed
Or Self is that who kills,
You have not realized the truth,
For Self is neither killed nor kills.

Self or God is never born
And never ever dies,
Though he appears to manifest
And change into a form.

The truth is that he is unborn,
Eternal, everlasting.
The form will change and be destroyed,
But he remains the same.

Since Self is neither born nor dies,
Then who is killed or kills?
To think that birth and death exist
Is ignorance, so never grieve.

Just as a man sheds worn out clothes
And takes new ones again,
So Self embodied as a form
Casts off this worn-out form
And enters in a new one.
That is the Truth of Self.

The Self cannot be cut by weapons,
Burnt by fire, wet by water.
It is not dried by wind, dear one,
It’s not destroyed. It is immortal.
It also is not hurt by words and their meaning.
It also is not hurt by words and their meaning.

I wish to remind you, everyone,
About the nature of the Self.
It is eternal, forever, omnipresent.
It is eternal, forever, omnipresent.
It is eternal, forever, omnipresent.
It is eternal, forever, omnipresent.

Realizing your true nature,
You should never grieve, dear one.
You should never grieve, dear one.
You should never grieve, dear one.

And Shyam tells you:

You may be high, you may be shy,
You may be small, you may be tall.
No one on earth wants to die.
No one on earth wants to die.

Know that your true nature is
Immortal and deathless.
Realizing this, you’ll be free
From the wheel of birth and death.

You will be free by meditating
On the truth of your own Self—
Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum,
Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum,
Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum.

Dear one, practise I am immortal.
Dear one, practise I am blissful.
Dear one, practise I am immortal.
Dear one, practise I am blissful.

Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum,
Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum,
Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum,
Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum,

Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum.
